Attica - Barbara R. Irvin VanHook age 79 of the rural Attica/Wingate area died unexpectedly in her home Friday evening, April 24, 2009. She had been in failing health the past several years. She was born near Wingate on April 18, 1930 the daughter of Hubert and Eva Fae Grenard Irvin. Barbara was a 1949 graduate of Wingate High School.
She married William 'Bill' VanHook in Wingate on December 30, 1948 and moved to the farm where they have resided since. For several years she was employed at RMC in Attica. Barbara had belonged to the Pleasant Hill United Church of Christ, the former American Legion Auxiliary in Wingate, Canasta Club and was a longtime worker for the Richland Township election board. She and her husband had enjoyed traveling the United States, wintered at Lake Okeechobee, FL for 30 years and enjoyed time with her grand and great-grand children.
Surviving along with her husband are a daughter Sharon F. (Husband Joseph) Dark of Crawfordsville. Three sons: Fred W (wife Rhonda) VanHook of Lafayette, David R (companion Kim Meyer) VanHook of Wingate, Hugh Bartin (wife Tracy) VanHook of Lafayette. Two sisters: Frances Beardsley and Nancy (husband Joy) Hoskins both of Wingate, a half sister Merry Christine (husband Steve) Voliva of Crawfordsville. Two step sisters Earline (husband Jim) Foster of Hillsboro and Sue Wildman of Veedersburg.. Three sisters-in-law: Connie (husband Kenny) Chester of Lafayette, Gladys Haxton of Lafayette and Donna Jackson of Stockwell. Eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a daughter Patricia 'Patty' VanHook in May 2006.
The family will receive guests on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 with Pastor Gordon Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in Wheeler Cemetery north of Wingate.
