Betty Lou (Mathews) VanMeter, age 97 of West Point, IN passed away on March 22, 2021 at Cumberland Point Nursing Home. Betty was born on December 2, 1923 in Talbot, IN. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Lola Cheney Matthews. Betty graduated from Boswell High School in 1941. She married Edgar W. VanMeter Jr. on March 15, 1946. He preceded her in death July 2, 1982.
Following graduation, she moved to Lafayette and worked for Risk Dental Clinic as a dental technician for several years. Betty then started working for 3 generations of the Jones Family, starting with the Jones Hatchery and then Jerry Jones Community Homes where she served as office manager and realtor until retiring at age 83.
Betty enjoyed her time after retiring with water aerobics at the YMCA. She also worked with the Women in Construction group doing crafts for local nursery schools, also was a 75-year member of the Eastern Star, and a 50 year plus member of Lafayette Altrusa Club. Betty especially enjoyed Purdue Men's and Women's Basketball.
Surviving are: a son, Robert (Donna) VanMeter of West Point; a daughter, Rita (John) Baines of West Lafayette. Two sisters, Emarene Abolt of Monticello and Wanda Rhodes of Boswell. 5 grandchildren, Michelle Birge, Nicole (Ted) Jeffcoate, Rob (Helene) VanMeter, Staceon (Mandy) Pickering, and Jennifer Miller, 8 great-grandchildren, Garrett, Mason, and McKinlie Birge, Braden and Alex Jeffcoate, and Jacob, Ethan, and Emily Pickering Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar, siblings, Art and Berneil.
Family and friends will be received at the West Point United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Russ Alley officiating. Interment will follow at West Point Cemetery. The family asks that those attending services please wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or the West Point Fire Department. Online condolences may be made at www.familyandfriendsfh.com .
