Obituary

Bonnie Jonell DeKock Memering, age 89, of West Lafayette, traveled her final journey, from this life into the next at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018 in Cumberland Pointe Health Campus, West Lafayette. She had been in failing health the past few years. Bonnie was born May 9, 1928 at the home of her late maternal grandparents, James and Jessie VanHook near Demotte, Indiana, daughter of the late Simon and Willmet VanHook DeKock. She married Roger Memering in 1948 and they were later divorced.

In 1946 Bonnie graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, IN. She previously was a student in West Lafayette Schools.

Bonnie was a 'stay at home' mom until her divorce in 1972, then beginning a working career at Purdue University in the early 1970's. She worked in the Dean of Students Office before going to the Department of Philosophy where she was the department secretary for over 20 years.

For over 50 years she was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ until 2012 when she became a devoted member of Federated Church to be near her family.

She enjoyed tending to her flower garden, where she grew roses and zenias. Bonnie was a gentle soul and a great, thoughtful listener.  She was inspired by the writings of R. W. Emerson and the paintings of Monet. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking cookies and creating soups from home-grown vegetables to share with family and friends.

Surviving are: two daughters. Melinda S. Stolz of West Lafayette, Kathy J. Truelsen of Cloverdale, CA. a daughter Susan Lindsey preceded her in death in 1989. Bonnie has one brother Philip Lanam of Lafayette and one sister Sherri (Leroy) Lanam Bunnell of Wingate. Her two grandsons, Trevor and Brady Thompson, plus seven step-grandchildren; Barbara, Bob, Debbie, Sandie, Amanda, Amy and Alexandria, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren who were very important to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Susan and son-in-laws, Thomas J Stolz, MD and Mark Truelsen.

Visitation time is 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2018 at The Federated Church in West Lafayette, with her funeral service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Sunday with Pastor John Williams officiating. Private family entombment on Monday at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette. Memorial contributions may be made to Federated Church.
