Obituary

Waynetown – Catherine L. Apperson Cowan, age 97 of Waynetown, IN died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011 in her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Benton County, Indiana April 7, 1914 daughter of the late Roney and Ocea Miniear Apperson. She was raised on a farm north of Crawfordsville, near Manchester Station and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1933. She was married to Byron Cowan in Crawfordsville, he preceded her in death September 2001. They had wintered in Bradenton, Florida since 1968.

Catherine assisted her husband on the family farm in western Montgomery County. She had graduated from Terre Haute Beauty Academy. During the late 1950's, 1960's and 1970's she and her sister operated an interior decorating business. They decorated, painted and tiled many of the new homes built in that era. The sisters were known as fast, neat and very good at their craft. Catherine also enjoyed designing and making quilts many of which she gave as gifts.

She had been an active member of the former Wingate United Methodist Church, now New Hope Chapel, member of Pythian Sisters, Order of Eastern Star first in Wingate then in Alamo. Attend Bradenton FL Trailer Estates Community Church and had been attending the Hillsboro Christian Church.

Catherine was a strong willed woman who loved to entertain guests in her home, with card games and always great food.

Surviving are, a daughter: Donna (Richard) Myers of Waynetown and two sons: Donald (Jean) Cowan of Waynetown and Steven (Martha) Cowan of Crawfordsville. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and two sisters: Rachel Prosser and Esther Welch.

Her family will receive guests Wednesday, October 5, 2011 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
