Doris JoAnn Oliver Meharry age 75, died peacefully, 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 following a lengthy illness in the house she and her husband built. She was born in Crawfordsville, IN on 'Election Day', November 2, 1936 daughter of the late Fred and Beatrice Haire Oliver. On October 6, 1953, she married James Lee Meharry and he preceded her in death on September 16, 1991.
JoAnn attended Jackson Heights School. She was an excellent organist and pianist, often playing in church and for weddings. She had assisted her husband in farming and worked along with James and their son with Meharry Agricultural Service, which provided aerial crop spraying with helicopters. She had worked locally for several area businesses as a bookkeeper. She recently retired from Walmart Optical Lab in Crawfordsville.
JoAnn enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and any mind teasing games. She was an avid Notre Dame Football fan, except when they played Navy and a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. JoAnn enjoyed politics, often working for the Democratic Party at the local, county and state level. She never missed voting in elections. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of the Easter Star.
Survivors include: Son, David (companion Kathy Bolinger) Meharry and daughter, Janice (fiance' Wes Odle) Meharry both of New Richmond. She was 'Grammy' to her four grandchildren: Joshua (wife Melissa) Meharry, Brittany (husband Josh) McCloud, Hilary (husband Dan) Grote, Tashney (husband Neil) Moseley. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren: Michael, Loren, Riley, Emmett, Dawson, Carson, Walker, Bailey-Jo, Olivia, Grace, Eli, Addison and number 13 on the way. Sister-in-law Pat Oliver of Santee, CA, four nephews: Dan, Bruce, Tim and Brian Oliver, two great nieces, four great nephews and many Oliver, Willis and Haire cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, David Oliver Master Chief Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy, Ret.
JoAnn's family with greet guests 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral/Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral Home with her grandson Joshua Meharry officiating. Immediately following the service, at her request, a traditional Irish Wake will be held at the home of her son Dave Meharry. All are invited to participate in this celebration. In following JoAnn's wishes, cremation will follow the service and inurnment will be in Meharry Cemetery near Wingate. JoAnn requests in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Meharry Medical College, Nashville, TN. Appropriate envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
