New Richmond – Doris I. Martin Snellenbarger, age 82 of New Richmond, died, 6:59 A.M. Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in Indiana University Health Hospital, Lafayette following a short illness. She was born in Montgomery County on December 29, 1928 the daughter of the late William and Grace Burkart Martin. On November 23, 1949 she was married to David Nelson Snellenbarger in New Richmond. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1996,
Doris graduated from New Richmond High School, the only girl in her class in 1946. She and her husband had farmed in the New Richmond area since 1952. She was employed many years as a clerk for the Montgomery County Highway Dept, worked at the License Branch and most recently Weaver Popcorn She served many years as Coal Creek Township Trustee, a position she held through 2010. She was an active member of the former New Richmond United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, United Methodist Women. She attended the New Richmond Church of Faith where she served as co-treasurer with her grandson, also belonged to New Richmond OES. In the 60s & 70s she was an active and influential member of the Republican Party and served as Vice Precinct Committeeman.
Doris enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her 'walk of faith' was recognized by all who knew her. She was the driving force behind the annual Martin Reunion held each year in New Richmond and most knew her as one of the best pie bakers in the area. Also she enjoyed the monthly card game with her friends.
Surviving are two daughters: Twins, Karen S. Cotten and Sharon A. Reamer both of Lafayette. Three sons: Raymond (companion April) Snellenbarger of New Richmond, David A. (wife Jana) Snellenbarger of Greencastle and Dale (Marsha) Snellenbarger of Crawfordsville. Two sisters: Della A. Deeb of Rochester and Helen Gay of Lafayette. A brother Charles R. 'Dick' (wife Mildred) Martin of New Richmond. Ten Grandchildren and 15 Great-grandchildren also survive as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and nine sisters.
Her family will receive guests at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.Friday, September 16, 2011, Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jason Smith officiating, burial will follow in New Richmond Cemetery, memorial contributions may be directed to 'Walk to Emmaus' envelopes available at the funeral home.
