Obituary

New Richmond – Douglas Miller Swank, age 76 of rural New Richmond, died Sunday noon, July 17, 2016 in the trauma unit of St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. He was injured in an auto accident, this past Wednesday. He was born in Marion County, July 20, 1939 and was the son of the late Reuben and Mildred Miller Swank. On October 17, 1981 he was married in Darlington to Lois Mae Fitzsimmons, who survives.

Doug was a graduate of Coal Creek Central High School and served in the US Army, 1962-1964. He was involved in agriculture most of his working career. He farmed, was a custom farmer as well as operated a custom harvesting business. He had formerly belonged to the New Richmond United Methodist Church and had served with the New Richmond Volunteer Fire Department.

Doug loved farming, fishing and flying! He flew to many 'trap shoots' that he participated in. He enjoyed gardening and riding his motorcycle.

Surviving along with his wife Lois Mae, are: three daughters: Nattra (Robert) Threet of Scottsburg, Chandra (Terry) Greer of Brandenburg, KY and Kimbra (Ron) Shaw of Orleans, IN and a son, Aaron (Melissa) Swank of Scottsburg. Sister-in-laws Shirley J. Smith of Colfax and Mary J. Renick of Crawfordsville and a brother-in-law Jerry L. Renick of Crawfordsville. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and a stillborn son.

Visitation hours are 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016 (Doug's birthday) at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Steve Padgett officiating. Inurnment will follow at New Richmond Cemetery at a later date.
