Obituary

Lafayette – Edgar L. 'Ed' Simmons, age 75 of Lafayette, died Friday, August 19, 2016 following complications resulting from his first cancer treatment.. Ed was born in Byron, Indiana, November 8, 1940 son of the late Arista and Elizabeth Brown Simmons. He married Sally Robinson in the Newtown Presbyterian Church, September 22, 1961 and she survives.

Ed was raised in Mellott. He was a graduate of Richland Township High School where he was active in basketball, baseball and had attended the Mellott Congregational Church. Following his graduation he joined the Indiana National Guard. Ed was employed as a Safety Coordinator at Alcoa in Lafayette from 1961 to 1999. He continued to consult for Alcoa for several years. He had attended the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Lafayette and had served as a Trustee.

Ed was a family man first and foremost! He took his entire family on annual Christmas vacations to Florida where he fully expected them to get along! He excelled in telling jokes, pulling pranks and attempted to always leave people with a smile. His mischievous grin and the twinkle in his eye endeared him to all he met and everyone worried what he had just done or gotten away with! He enjoyed his lunches at Shellie's Diner and when he wore a younger man's clothes, he enjoyed golf, tennis, hunting and fishing. Ed was a happy man and enjoyed the old classics on TV…Red Skelton, Tim Conway and the other restricted comedies.

Surviving along with his wife Sally, are three daughters: Tracy (Jeff) Wetterlin of Midway, Utah, Elizabeth (Newlin) Howard of West Lafayette, and Nadra (Tim) Woerner of Zionsville. Six grandchildren: Lily and Rachel Wetterlin, Ben and Morgan Howard, Zachery and Jaden Woerner. A sister Grace Coyner of Columbus also survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Don Clark and Jack Simmons.

Ed's family will greet guests 4:00 – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 24th at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Parks officiating. A private inurnment will occur in the Newtown Cemetery at a later date.
