Mellott – Edison H. Cross age 80 of Mellott, died unexpectedly 6:36 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in Seton Specialty Hospital, Lafayette. He was born in Flippin , Kentucky on June 3, 1930 son of the late Virgil and Maggie Lloyd Cross. He was married to Maxine Hurd on October 7, 1954 in Temple Hill, Kentucky and she survives.
He attended school in Kentucky, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948 and served during the Korean Conflict, was discharged as Sgt. First Class, serving thru 1954. He was very proud of his military service and had great knowledge of military history and wars.
Edison retired from C & D Technologies in Attica, where he was employed as a Hyster operator and truck driver. He was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman, birdwatcher and loved the outdoors. He was a loyal family man and enjoyed sharing stories of the Army. As a 'colorful' character, you always knew where Edison stood on any issue.
Surviving are his wife: Maxine Hurd Cross, daughter: Diane (Mike) Robinson of Lafayette, son: Dennie (Karen) Cross of Lafayette, brother: Willie (Mattie) Cross of Mellott, sister Edith (Ron) Coleman of Kokomo. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters: Debbie and Dottie. Three brothers: Andrew, Drewey, Louie and a sister Vivian.
The family will receive guests, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2010 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2011 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate with Pastor Richard Carty officiating, burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro with Military Graveside services by Veedersburg American Legion Post 288.
