IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth "Betty" Faye
(Stenger) Armstrong
March 21, 1930 – March 31, 2026
Interment
Calvary Cemetery
Betty Armstrong died peacefully in her home in Crawfordsville, Indiana on March 31st, 2026 at the age of 96.
She was born on March 21, 1930 in Villa Grove, IL, the youngest daughter of Frank and Edna (Snyder) Stenger. Betty graduated from Tuscola High School. Three years later, she married Donald F. Armstrong on June 12, 1951 at Forty Martyrs Church in Tuscola, IL. They were happily married for 47 years, and separated too soon, when he passed on April 30, 1998.
In 1952, the young couple moved to Indiana, where they resided and farmed just northwest of Crawfordsville for many years.
Betty worked at R.R. Donnelly’s from 1954 until 1960. She worked at WCVL Radio Station from 1974 until 1982. In 1982 she started working at ATAPCO (Crawford Industries), where she eventually worked as a purchaser and warehouse supervisor until her retirement in 1995.
Betty was an active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church for over 75 years, where she just passed on the chairmanship of the Haitian Jewelry Committee. She also hosted a weekly prayer group in her home that continued right up until her passing. Other longtime interests included the Linden 4M Sewing Group and she held various offices in Home Extension Clubs for over 40 years. Betty enjoyed knitting and had given away over 250 prayer shawls. She also had a passion for horses and taught many people to ride. She supplied leadership to the 4-H Horse & Pony club for the 10 years her daughter was active in it. She especially loved the combination of friends, horses and nature that horseback trail riding in Brown County provided. Betty always kept her bird feeders full and kept a running log of all the bird species she saw. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and many friends - her door was always open.
Surviving are: Daughter, Linda Hitchings of Brownsburg, IN; Bonus Daughter, Sandy Dossett of Crawfordsville, IN; Grandchildren: Rachel (Rae) Hitchings of Brownsburg, IN, Matthew Hitchings of Indianapolis, IN, Sarah Stanek (husband: Jonathan) of Brownsburg, IN, and Michael Hitchings of Brownsburg, IN; Many nieces and nephews also survive. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; son, Steven Armstrong; and siblings, Margaret, Donald, Joe, and Robert.
Visitation from 10-noon and Mass of Christian Burial at noon will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church on April 8, 2026 with Father Michael Bower officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Crawfordsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Catholic Relief Services, or a charity of your choice.
