Lafayette – Gary Kenneth Dowling, age 63, of rural Lafayette, died unexpectedly at 11:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 in IU Health Hospital, Lafayette. He was born August 4, 1949 in Long Island New York, son of the late Curt and Edna Scudder Dowling.

He was a graduate of Hialeah High School, Hialeah, Florida. He was a member of the U.S. Army and served in Viet Nam. For 25 plus years he was employed by his family business, Dowling Food Sales, as branch manager at the Atlanta, Georgia office.

Gary was a 'die hard' Yankees fan and enjoyed golf. An accomplished guitarist, Gary gave lessons and played for Dianna Ross early in her career. He was a member of American Legion Post 11 and enjoyed his grandchildren.

Surviving is his daughter: Carolyn (Adam) Firestone of Fort Wayne. Four grandchildren: Sophia, Lillian, Isaac and Elijah and a brother, Thomas Smith in Argentina. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Smith.

In keeping with his wishes, Gary will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at Mom's Place, 1301 Union Street, Lafayette at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November, 3, 2012 .
