Obituary

Attica – Gary L. Verhey, age 66 of Attica, passed away at 12:50 PM Thursday, September 27, 2018 at IU Health Hospital, Lafayette.  He had been in failing health the past several months.  Gary was born in Williamsport on February 7, 1952, son of the late Howard and Helen Young Verhey.  He married Gayla Johnson Verhey in Williamsport on October 23, 1971 and she survives.

Gary was a 1970 graduate of Attica High School and attended Indiana State University.  He was employed by the Pritcher-Scott Chevrolet-Buick dealership for 17 years and retired from Caterpillar in Lafayette after 25 years as a 'large engine assembler'.  While at Cat, Gary was credited for designing an 'organizational parts box' to facilitate engine assembly and it is still used today.  He thoroughly enjoyed farming with his father-in-law from the 70s into the late 90s in Warren County.

Gary was a member of the Attica Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder.  He was a builder, designer, 'fixer',…you name it, he could do anything with his hands!  His home and daughter's home reflect his talented work.  He enjoyed gardening, grilling out, camping, and dancing. He and Gayla enjoyed taking Country and Ball Room dance lessons.  His 'world' was his family, especially his grandchildren, Sweet Pea and Buddy Boy!

Surviving with his wife Gayla, are: two daughters; Kendra (Nick Edwards) Ford of Williamsport and Ashley (fiance' Darin Rinehart) Verhey of Phoenix, AZ.  Grandchildren Rileigh Mulkey 'Sweet Pea' and Colin Ford 'Buddy Boy'. A sister, Janet (Larry) Smith of Brookston and brother, Jerry (Susan) Verhey of Veedersburg.  He was preceded in death by his parents, inlaws Charles and Iva Johnson, nephew Alan Verhey, great nephew Lincoln McGrew, and brother-in-law Tom Lemming.

The family will greet guests, 10:00 – 11:00 AM Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Attica Christian Church, with a memorial funeral service 11:00 AM Friday at the church with Pastor Bob Ellness officiating.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the Attica Christian Church or Seeger FFA. Visit us at www.familyandfriendsfh.com
