Obituary

Gene Owen Hougland, age 81, died 7:29 a.m. Monday, September 7, 2015 in his home in Crawfordsville after a recent battle with cancer. Gene was born in Covington on January 28, 1934, the son of the late Kenneth and Hildreth Hougland. He was a graduate of Covington High School and was married to the late Dot Taylor Hougland on June 7, 1953 in West Lebanon, she preceded him in death February 28, 2012.

Gene was retired from farming in the Newtown/Mellott area. Gene and Dot began farming for the late John and Bea Kell, north of Newtown and east of Mellott. He was a lifetime member of the Newtown Community Church.

Survivng are his twin daughters, Charol (Jim) Ellingwood of Wallace, Carol (Dave) Forkner of Conyers, GA, sister Katie (Dwight) Cox of Crawfordsville, grandchildren Lea Ellingwood of Indianapolis, Amy Ellingwood of Wallace, Luke Ellingwood of San Diego, CA, Kyle (Tiffany) Forkner of Parker, CO, and Jared (Jarett) of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Sophia Forkner and Jack Forkner as well as many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife, Dot.

Gene and Dot fully lived out their wedding vows, in sickness and in heath "'till death do us part." Gene loved his wife passionately, his family deeply, and farming consistently until the Lord took him home.

His family will receive guests, 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the funeral home, with family and friends officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Covington.
