Crawfordsville –Leonard Gordon 'Bud' Holloway age 89, formerly of Wingate, died in his Crawfordsville home following a lengthy illness at 12:50 P.M. Thursday, July 29, 2010. He was born in Wingate, November 12, 1920 the son of the late Phillip and Martha Merson Holloway. On September 7, 1950 he was married in Darlington to Rose Marie 'Pooch' Ward, she survives.
Bud graduated from Wingate High School and began farming in the Wingate area. While farming he began working part time for the Montgomery County Highway Department. In 1975 he retired from farming and began full time with the highway department where he remained employed for 24 years. The last 10 years of his career, he served as Superintendant of the Montgomery County Highway Dept. Following his retirement, he worked at Bane Equipment Company for a few years. They moved to Crawfordsville in 2007.
Since the age of 10 he had belonged to the United Methodist Church and now New Hope Chapel in Wingate. A 65 year member of the Wingate then New Richmond Masonic Lodge. He had also served the community of Wingate as a longtime town board member and with the volunteer fire department, of which he had served as fire chief. Bud enjoyed Nascar and Indy Car racing and loved trains and Nickle Plate Rail Road history. During World War II he served with the Civil Defense as an enemy aircraft spotter in the tower just west of Wingate. That tower sat on the property now occupied by Family & Friends Funeral Home . Bud was known as a good guy and described by many as a 'man of principle'.
Surviving along with his wife is, a daughter Danielle (husband Brad) Kinkead of New Ross and two granddaughters: Morgan and Emma. Also surviving is Larry (wife Kay) Ward of Veedersburg who was raised in their home. He is the brother of Pooch. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Jean Edwards.
The family will greet guests on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 2:00 – 6:00 P.M. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 2, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors Duane Mycroft and Gordon Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wingate.
