Hillsboro - Harry A. Hartshorn age 89 of Hillsboro, IN died in Carle Hospital, Urbana, Illinois at 8:53 p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 following a two year illness. He was born in Danville, Illinois January 9, 1921 the son of Harry Hartshorn and Madeline Berhalter Hartshorn Monahan, they preceded him in death. He was first married to Edwina Lynch, she preceded him in death, later he married Marilyn Crawford, she also preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, IL and had attended Georgetown University. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Marine Corps, in the Pacific Theater of operations including Iwo Jima and Saipan, he was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was a previous partner in the former Berhalter Funeral Home in Danville, IL. Harry was an accomplished artist and had lived in Malaga, Spain and Ensenada, Mexico before retiring in San Diego, CA. He enjoyed opera, classical music and sports. He recently moved to Hillsboro to live with his daughter and her family.
Surviving are; two daughters, Ann (Michael) Robb of Savannah, GA, Jane (Jack) Ziegler of Hillsboro, IN and a son: Joe Hartshorn, Hillsboro, IN. Grandchildren: Matt Janosik, Christine Gretter, Luke (Jessie) Janosik, Jennifer (Robert) Campbell, Christopher Styer, Taylor Hartshorn and Nicole Crawford. Great-Grandchildren: Dane Gretter, Ethan Champbell, Anna Janosik, Cody Crawford. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two aunts Mary and Lillian Berhalter, a sister Jane Monahan Houpt and an infant brother.
A funeral mass will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, December 16, 2010 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1303 N. Walnut, Danville, IL with Rev. Gregory Nelson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
