Wingate – Josephine Meharry McCullough, age 74, died Sunday, October 3, 2010 in the Village of East Harbor Nursing Home, in Chesterfield MI. She was born in Lafayette on December 12, 1935 to the late Lee Allen and Margaret Ovita Johnson Meharry. In New Richmond on June 9, 1957 she was married to Max D. McCullough who survives. They both were in the last graduating class of Wingate High School in 1953. Recently they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Josephine earned her Master's of Special Education through Wayne State University and employed as a speech pathologist for East Detroit Public Schools for over 30 years. She was a member of Michigan Assc. of Retired Teachers and Federation of Retired Teachers. A founding member and board member of the Comprehensive Youth Board. She enjoyed cooking, watching the Food Channel and trying their recipes. An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed creating clothing and children's Halloween costumes and created several of daughter Kathryn's prom dresses. In her flower garden, she proudly grew her special peach colored iris. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and visiting their families.
Survivors include her husband Max McCullough: a son A. Philip (Holly Hudson) McCullough of Seattle, Washington, daughter: Kathryn (Matthew) McCroskery of St. Clair Shores, MI. a brother Judd (Priscilla) Meharry of Wingate.
Visitation will be held, Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate,
9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow in Meharry Cemetery, with her son-in-law Matt McCroskery officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Macomb Intermediate School District Homeless Student Fund or East Detroit Public Schools Scholarship Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
