Obituary

Wingate – Larry Eugene South Pensinger, age 88 of rural Wingate, passed away Monday, January 26, 2021 in Century Villa Health Center in Greentown.  Larry was born in Decatur, IL December 16, 1932 son of the late Lynn and Mary Houk Pensinger.  He married Rachel Dalton in North Terre Haute March 3, 1960 and she survives.

Larry was in the last graduating class of Bridgeton High School in 1950. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  After his honorable discharge he took engineering courses at Rose Polytechnic and Purdue University.  He took a summer position with Paul I. Cripe, Inc in Indianapolis as a draftsman.  He remained with the company for 35 years and became a Licensed Land Surveyor.  Larry was involved in many northside projects in Marion County, including the Pyramids and Geist Reservoir.   Later he was employed several years with Butterworth & Associates in Avon (now Kruse Consulting).

Larry was a talented builder.  He and Rachel purchased 5 acres in Avon, cleared the site, and along with family assistance designed and built their home after the contractor fell ill.  Larry enjoyed taking his family camping.  They started out in a Ford pickup and Coleman cabin tent, then later converted a van into a camping van.  They enjoyed visiting National Park locations.  Finally Larry and Rachel bought a 5 th wheel camper and spent several winters at Pacetti's Fish Camp near Jacksonville, FL.  They enjoyed their Florida friends, family and golfing.

Larry was a board member of the Hendricks County Soil & Water Conservation District and active member of Bartlett Chapel United Methodist Church in Avon. More recently he attended New Hope Chapel in Wingate.

Surviving along with his wife Rachel are: two daughters; Carolyn Sue Pensinger and Kathy Ann (David) Pensinger Kurfman both of Kokomo.  Grandsons; Benjamin and Nathaniel Kurfman.  Half brothers; Cecil Duane (Nancy) South of Marshall and David (Colleen) South of Veedersburg.  He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Cecil South, grandson Lukas Allen Jones.

Visitation hours are 12:00 – 2:00 PM Saturday, January 30, 2021, with funeral services following at 2:00 PM with Pastor Duane Mycroft officiating at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate.  Interment will following in Ball Hill Cemetery, Cutler.  Memorial contributions may be directed to New Hope Chapel, Wingate.  Visit us at www.familyandfriendsfh.com to sign the guest book or leave a condolence.  Larry's service can be seen on our Facebook page.  Please adhere to COVID CDC and ISDH recommendations.  Larry's service can be watched live and recorded on Family and Friends Funeral Home Facebook page.
