He was born on May 9, 1941 to James Nolan (1907-1959) and Elizabeth Mullen (1911-1970) Kirkpatrick and was raised on a farm south of Waynetown. Lee graduated from Waynetown High School in 1959. He married Rita Ann (Henthorn) Kirkpatrick, his high school sweetheart on September 29, 1961 in Waynetown.

After a bitter winter Lee and Rita went to Florida in February 1963 on a vacation, they both found employment, and spent the next 53 years living in Riviera Beach, Key West and Tallahassee, Florida.  He was on the Riviera Beach Police Department, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Indiana State Police.  He retired in 1993 after thirty years of police work and 25 of those years were with the Florida Highway Patrol.  After his retirement as a Trooper, he became a private investigator and did security work until 2010.

He officiated high school basketball for 25 years.  He loved to go fishing, travel, camping, cutting firewood with his boys, which he was sure they enjoyed doing!  However, his real enjoyment in life was his two sons and he enjoyed watching them grow and mature into fine men.  Jay (Leslie) and their sons, Cahill and Conan live in Bronson, Iowa.  Nolan (Callie) and their son Luke live in Waynetown, and step-son Seth resides in Carlton, Minnesota and step-son James is also in Minnesota.

Lee was raised in the Waynetown Baptist Church and now attends Prairie Chapel Church near Hillsboro. He joined the Waynetown Masonic Lodge on March 29, 1962 at the age of 21 and was a continuous member after the Waynetown and Hillsboro Lodges merged.
