Obituary

Crawfordsville – Melvin D. Verhey 57 of Crawfordsville died at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 in his home surrounded by family. He was diagnosed with cancer in August. Melvin was born in Lafayette on April 24, 1952 the son of the late Harry Verhey and Barbara J. Lester Verhey who survives. He was a graduate of Coal Creek Central High School. He was first married to Kathy Hopkins and they divorced, he later married Sharon L. Fry Harrison and she survives.

For the past 15 years Melvin had been employed by Fairfield Contractors Inc. in Lafayette, where he was a foreman. Previously he had worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Indiana Department of Transportation. He was a member of both the Eagles and Moose Lodge. Prior to moving to Crawfordsville he raised Boer goats and was a lifetime member of the Boer Goat Association. Melvin enjoyed woodworking, farming and spending time at the lake.

Surviving along with his wife are sons: Brian K. (wife Dianna) Verhey of rural Waynetown, Mike E. (wife Paulla) Harrison of Alabama and a daughter Jodi K (husband Jason) Greenlee of Wayentown.
Two sisters; Marsha Applegate of Romney and Marlena Verhey of Coatsville. Three brothers: Marvin (wife Candy) Verhey of Danville, IN, Mike (wife Cindy) of Attica, and Marlin (wife Denise) Verhey of Lafayette. Seven grandchildren also survive.

The family will greet guests Sunday, February 14, 2010, from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Monday from
9:00 a.m – 11:00 a.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 15, at the funeral home, with pastor Duane Mycroft officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Grant Ave. in Crawfordsville . Memorial contributions may be directed to Mooseheart or American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
