October 2, 1940 – January 30, 2019
Randall Tony Janssen – 78, of Crawfordsville, IN died unexpectedly of a stroke while vacationing in Florida on January 30, 2019. He was born on October 2, 1940 in Lafayette, IN to the late William T. Janssen and the late Gwenneth (Murdock) Janssen-Haas. He graduated from Otterbein High School in 1958 and then joined the United States Air Force. He went on to attend the Indiana State Police Academy and joined the force in 1964. He was married to the love of his life for 43 years, Lois Ann (Fry) Janssen. They were married on December 12, 1975 in Lafayette. He retired from the Indiana State Police after a twenty year career and later Alcoa. He was a member of the FOP and Otterbein American Legion Post 90. He was a past member of Faith Lutheran Church of Otterbein.
He is survived by his children: Ellen (Troy) Milligan of Hillsboro, IN; Eileen (Matthew) Dashiell of Lewisville, TX; David Janssen of North Liberty, IN; Erich Janssen of North Liberty, IN; two sisters: Carol Hampton of Huntertown, IN and Bonita Widmer of West Lafayette, IN. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jacob and Katie Dashiell and others. Nieces and Nephews: Kathy (Hampton) Konger; Kelly (Hampton) Reed; Sarah (Widmer) Lee; Beverly (Fry) Porter; and Robert Fry.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Jeffery and Steven; brothers-in-law, Larry Hampton, Leroy "Doc" Widmer, Willis Fry; and mother-in-law, Lorene "Granny" Fry.
If you knew Randy, chances are you were inducted into at least one of his hobbies. Traveling often included friends and family trips around the fifty states and to Europe, New Zealand and Africa. He loved reading and going to the library, sometimes multiple times a day. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great nieces and nephews. Some of his hobbies included hunting, panning for gold, searching for meteorites, ballistics, fishing, farming, and astronomy. He was happiest spending time with friends and family, and eating butter pecan ice cream cones and apple pie.
Visitation hours are 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, with funeral services following at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with Gary Eason officiating. Interment will follow in Asbury Cemetery, West Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Crawfordsville District Public Library 205 S. Washington Street, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
