West Point - Richard P. 'Dick' Swank, age 59 and lifetime West Point area resident, died unexpectedly at 5:12 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2010 as a result of complications from cancer, in Clarian Arnett Hospital, Lafayette. Dick was born in Lafayette on October 2, 1951 the son of the late Phillip Swank and Lola Barder Swank, who survives. On March 27, 1971 he was married to Cathy J. Carlson in Jackson Heights Church and she survives.
Dick graduated from Southwestern High School with the Class of 1969. He remained in the West Point area and with his wife farmed in Tippecanoe, Montgomery, Fountain and Warren Counties. He was a member of the West Point United Methodist Church and formerly belonged to the West Point Lions Club and was a board member of Tippecanoe County FSA from 1985 - 1995. Dick's passion was farming. His real enjoyment came from finding, restoring, collecting, showing and playing with vintage farm equipment. He especially sought John Deere and International Harvester tractors. Dick was also a Nascar enthusiast. He and Cathy had attended many major races around the country. They also enjoyed snowmobile trips to the U.P. in Michigan.
Anyone who was fortunate to call Dick their friend will miss his easy going manner, big grin, infectious laugh and knowledge of collectable farm equipment .
Surviving with his wife and mother are, two daughters: Amy (Paul) Wellmaker of Williamsport and Beth Gutwein of Indianapolis. Three grandchildren: Jacqueline and Tyler Gutwein, Katelyn Wellmaker. Two brothers: Don and Steve Swank both of Lafayette. A sister: Ruth Anne Black of Normal, IL He was preceded in death by his father and brother Kenneth.
Visitation hours are 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 18, with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating. Interment will follow in West Point Cemetery.
