Obituary

West Point – Robert E. McClellan age 89, died Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. following a lengthy illness in Rosewalk Village, Lafayette. Bob was born in Goodland, IN on June 6, 1922 son of the late Normal and Mary Hobbs McClellan. He was a graduate of Goodland High School with the class of 1940 and married Loretta Webb McClellan in Lafayette. She preceded him in death in 1998.

Bob was very proud of his military service and his fellow soldiers. He joined the Army Air Corps in June of 1942 and was trained as an airplane armament specialist, servicing the A-20, P-40 and B-32. He served during WW II with 312th Bomber Group, 387th Bomb Squadron, 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theater of War from Nov. 1943 – October 1945. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, The Philippines and Okinawa. He attained the rank of S/Sgt. and awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, The Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star and The Presidential Unit Citation.

Following the war Bob returned and worked with Lafayette Foods for 15 years, he then spent 13 years with Ardapple Moving and Storage. In 1971 he and his wife Loretta began operating and owning The Farm Boy Grocery in West Point, which they operated until retirement.

Bob was an active member of the West Point community, serving on the West Point Volunteer Fire Department, West Point United Methodist Church, West Point Lions Club and formerly belonged to Shawnee Masonic Lodge and served as Wabash Township Trustee. He was Past Commander/Life Member of American Legion Post 11, Lafayette. Past Commander of VFW Post 2791, Tinley Park, IL and member of Attica VFW #3318. A member of 40/8 #364 Lafayette and was a charter member of Lafayette Chapter of Barbershop Quartet Singers.

Survivors include: son; Gene McClellan of Spokane, WA. Granddaughter; Abby Wong, Great granddaughter Kelly Wong. Special friend Rozanne Weaver of West Point. Many nieces and nephews and a host of friends privileged to call Bob a friend. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, brothers; Raymond, Harold, Homer McClellan, Sisters; Dorothy Heck, Edith Hiestand, Elnora Bullman, Virginia Cole, Nephews; Bill McClellan, Ralph Heck, niece Rosemary Patterson.

Friends may call at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, FRIDAY, June 15, 2012, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A memorial service/celebration of life will begin at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating. Graveside services at 10:00 a.m. SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 2012, Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lafayette with military honors by American Legion Post 11. In lieu of flowers it is requested memorials be made to West Point Volunteer Fired Dept. P.O. Box 71 West point, IN 47992, or envelopes available at the funeral home.
