Obituary

Wingate – Robert G. Small, age 81 of Wingate, died on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 7:27 a.m. following a lengthy illness, in Seton Specialty Hospital, Lafayette. Bob was born June 19, 1928 the son of Russell and Ida Willis Small in Jackson Township of Tippecanoe County on the family farm which they still own. He was a graduate of Jackson High School and on May 20th, 1950 he was married to Mary Kathryn Stephens, who survives.

Following graduation Bob began working for Robinson Implement Company, an International Harvester dealership in Wingate, in the parts department. He became the parts manager and was with the dealership 45 years. Following the closing of the dealership, Bob went to work for Bane Equipment Company also in Wingate, where he remained until he retired a few years later. Bob had the unique ability to remember part numbers and was known to willingly assist local farmers on weekends, holidays and after hours when they needed parts, to keep them running.

He had served with the Indiana National Guard, was a former member of the Mercer Masonic Lodge in Wingate and the Jackson Heights United Methodist Church. He enjoyed, camping, fishing, golfing, jazz music, dancing, Purdue sports and the Chicago Cubs.

Bob was an accomplished drummer, had been a member of the Musicians Union and had played with the Purdue Salty Dogs, Doc Priebes Pills, and several other Dixie Land Jazz Bands.

Surviving along with his wife are two daughters: Kathy Jo (Frank) Jewell of New Richmond, and Erin Small of Evergreen, CO. A son: Eric (wife Glenda) Small of Crawfordsville. Four grandchildren: Matthew (Nicole) Jewell, Clayton Jewell, Danielle Small and Brittany Small. Great-grandchildren: Abbie, Jessica and Andrew.

Friends may call at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, Sunday, May 9, 2010 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home with Pastor Duane Mycroft officiating, burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wingate. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
