West Lafayette – Russell B. Bible age 89 of South River Road, West Lafayette died at 9:21 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2010 in St. Elizabeth East Hospital, following a short illness. He was born in New Richmond, Indiana on March 1, 1921, the son of James E. and Alice M. Koons Bible, grew up on a farm just west of Wingate and graduated from Wingate High School.
Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II discharged as a Sergeant , then a member of the Indiana National Guard Reserves. He first was employed as a truck driver then a mechanic following his discharge. He then became the Animal Control Officer for the City of Lafayette from where he retired. He also served as a reserve police officer for the Lafayette Police Department turning in his badge at age 80. Since 1969 he was the caretaker of the William Sanders Memorial Police Range and since 1972 he and his companion Mary Lowery were the caretakers and lived on the range, just off South River Road, West Lafayette. Russell had a passion for police work and was proud of his grandson who is a trooper for the Louisiana State Police.
Russell was a member of the American Legion, Life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a belonged to the NRA.
Survivors include: a daughter Lois (husband F.G.) Stevens of Ash Flat, Arkansas, his long time companion Mary Lowery with whom he made his home, two grandchildren Trooper Fred (wife Dawn) Stevens II of Simpson, LA and Carol (husband Ja) Brister of Elmer, LA. Five great-grandchildren Dwayne and Corey Farmer, Alicia Brister, Rebecca Stevens and Elizabeth Ragland. Two great-great-grandchildren Tyler and Lane.
Friends may call at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Tony Carson, Chaplain for Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Dept. officiating.
