Obituary

Wingate - William D. 'Bill' Mitchell age 88, died Tuesday morning, February 3, 2009 in his rural Wingate farm home. He had been in failing health the past several years. He was born in Danville, IL on April17, 1920 the son of Leslie and Beulah Hastings Mitchell they preceded him in death. He was a 1937 graduate of Newtown High School and served in the U.S. Navy for 32 months.

On January 27, 1940 he married Mary Kay 'Daisy' Smith in Lafayette, she survives. Last week they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary at the Spartan Inn in Wingate with many family members and friends. At age 15, Bill helped his father plant corn with a Farmall F 20 tractor in preparation for the 1935 National Corn Husking Contest hosted on the Mitchell Farm just outside of Newtown. That same tractor is still proudly owned by the family. Bill was a lifelong farmer in the Newtown and Wingate area, even after his retirement he continued to help his son-in-law on the farm.

He was a member of the former Newtown Presbyterian Church and now the Newtown Community Church. He and his wife were avid dancers and attended Jazz Fests in Colorado, Montana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana until health slowed them down the past few years.

Surviving along with his wife are two daughters: Pam (Max) Weaver of Minden, Nebraska and Jackie (Mark) Shepherd of Wingate. Five grandchildren: Bret, Bart and Bert Weaver, Michael and Angie Shepherd. 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren, 5 nephews and a niece also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers Donnell and Daniel Mitchell and nephew Jack Mitchell.

Guests may greet the family, Friday, February 6th from 4 - 7p.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate . A celebration of Bill's Life will be held Saturday, February 7th, 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mike Parks officiating, music will be provided by 'Hiway 341 Band'. At Bill's request, he will have a private inurnment in Newtown Cemetery in the spring. The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers may best be directed to the Newtown Community Church.
